Digger Jack Mason
Passes On
After a long illness the death took place at his late residence Cox Street, Rylstone, on Friday evening, of Harold George (Jack) Mason, at the age of 43 years. By the passing of Jack Mason, the district has lost a man with whom it was an honor to claim friendship; one who was always ready to help his less fortunate fellow beings. Although for the past few years not enjoying good health by any means, Jack was always ready to render assistance at Ine time when it meant so much. I well remember, some few years ago, when things were not breaking writer's way, Jack saw an opportunity where he could render me help. He came from Rylstone at 9 o'clock one night and put me on the right track. Personal gain never entered into good turns that Jack Mason did. I am happy in the knowledge that I clasped this fine fellow's hand a few hours before he was called home.
The late Jack Mason was one of the youngest members of the Rylstone Soldiers' Sub-branch, and for many years he acted as caretaker of the branch property, a duty he faithfully fulfilled. The branch will miss him greatly as he was one of the splendid co-operation of Mrs. Mason, all our social functions were an assured success.
The funeral, which took place on Saturday, was largely attended. After a service in the Rylstone Church of England, conducted by Archdeacon Bromhead, the remains were interred in the Rylstone Cemetery. The Union Jack-draped casket was borne to its last resting place by the following members of the local sub-branch, viz., Stan McQuiggin president), E. J. Mc Quiggin (treasurer), D. F. Lang (secretary) and D. Rogers. Diggers walked behind the pall-bearers. After the service at the grave, the Last Post was sounded by Captain Rees, and the sub-branch members filed past the grave dropping their sprigs of remembrance on the casket.
The End.
This is my friend— of you and I,
Sure as we're born we have to die;
When we go— it is nice to know—
A memory kind we leave behind
Of good deeds done,
The fruits of which will still be
seen —
The world a little better because
we've been.
The deceased was the only son of Mr. Frank Mason and the late Mrs. Mason, Ti-Tree Flat, Rylstone. He is survived by a widow and four sisters, Mrs. M. Cowell (Glades ville), Mrs. W. Hayward (Kandos), Mrs. Jack Lloyd (Kandos), and Mrs. Frank Mitchell (Kandos), to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.
