10 Dec 1918: | Honoured Distinguished Conduct Medal, Citation reads: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attack on a village. Seeing a unit on the left flank held up by rifle and machine gun fire, he took a patrol of five men across the river and by skilful leadership succeeded in locating and rushing several enemy posts, capturing or killing the garrisons and clearing up the area in front of the right flank of the attacking troops for a considerable distance. In particular he rushed one strong post, capturing one officer, thirty one other ranks and seven machine guns. Altogether his party accounted for one officer, seventy one other ranks, and nine machine guns. He did splendid work and showed great courage and initiative. The details provided are taken from the book "Stealth Raiders - a few daring men in 1918" written by Lucas Jordan, published 2017. refer to page 302 to get the list of all of the many references to his service in this book. Also, refer to pages 267 and 285. Prior to the war he was a railway engine cleaner of Barhurst NSW. He enlisted 19th Aug 1914 aged 19 years. He served with the 1st Infantry Battalion and rose through the ranks to reach CQMS, a company quarter master sergeant. During his service he earned a Distinguished Conduct Medal DCM. He survived the war, departing the UK for home 24th Dec 1918.
