Biography contributed by Saint Ignatius' College

John Roe Perry was a 23-year old married man who joined the 50th Battalion to serve his country. John was born in Crystal Brook in South Australia where he lived with his mother and father, before he left home to live with his wife Laura Emily. Before he joined the war he was working as a dairyman who would deliver bottles of milk to people. John stood at 5 foot 10 inches and weighed 87kg.

John only fought briefly at the front; he reached his unit on 27 July 1916 and was killed in action on 16 August.

Along with many other soldiers, John received three medals for fighting in the war. He received a Victory medal which all soldiers received for winning the war, one for fighting in the war with the British army (which again all soldiers received) and he also received a medal for fighting in the war in the years 1914 to 1915.

ANZAC stands for Australia and New Zealand Army Corps. Being an ANZAC means that you fought alongside all of the Australians that gave their life to serve the country. Since joining up to the army was optional, this made the men that did sign up even more memorable. John was among many of these men that served and unfortunately lost his life in France. John fought in the army as a private. Being an ANZAC was a great honour as people knew you for serving and giving your life to the country. John was unfortunately shot and killed on 16th of August 1916 but he will always be remembered as a great man who served and gave his life for this country.
