Biography contributed by Paul Lemar

Ernest was the son of William BURTON & Mary JERRED and was born on the 12th of April 1885 in Telowie, SA.

His mother was the daughter of John JERRED & Jane NEAGLE and was born on the 19th of January 1870 in Adelaide, SA.

His mother married Henry MORRIS on the 2nd of February 1886 at the residence of her father, John Jerred in Pt Germein, SA and Ernest gained 2 half siblings.

His mother then married Frederick Herman ZANKER on the 30th of June 1896 at the residence of her father, John Jerred in Pt Germein, SA.
Frederick was a brickmaker and bricklayer and lived in Pt Pirie, so Ernest moved to Solomontown, Pt Pirie and Ernest gained 6 more half siblings.

After leaving school Ernest gained employment as a labourer and enjoyed playing football the Solomontown Football Club and at some point he fractured his right Tibia.
With the outbreak of WW1 he tried to enlist into the AIF but was first rejected because of his left eye.

At the age of 32, Ernest successfully re-enlisted into the AIF on the 11th of August 1915 in Adelaide and allotted the service number 3045 and posted to A Company, 2nd Depot Battalion in Mitcham Camp.
On the 16th of September he was posted to the 27th Battalion, 7th Reinforcements and embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT A7 Medic on the 12th of January 1916, disembarked in Alexandria on the 16th of February.

He trained in Tel-el-Kebir and was then transferred to the 32nd Battalion, but suffered from his old fractured leg injury and recommended for return to Australia.

Ernest embarked from Seuz on board HMAT Seang Choon on the 17th of July 1916, disembarked in Melbourne on the 18th of August and then entrained to Adelaide.

He was discharged, medically unfit, from the AIF on the 6th of September 1916 and awarded a war pension of £1/10/- per fortnight.

Ernest married Lily Adela RAWSON on the 25th of December 1916 in the Manse, Partridge Street, Glenelg, SA.
Lily was the daughter of Edwin Thomas RAWSON & Annie Bertha KILMARTIN and was born on the 26th of September 1887 in Prospect, SA.

They made their home at 29 Westley Street, Pt Pirie West and in February 1917 his war pension was decreased to 15/- per fortnight.
Then on the 27th of September 1917 his pension was cancelled, but was then reinstated on the 15th of February 1918.

Four days later they welcomed their first child; Mavis Mary on the 19th of February 1918, followed by Walter Ernest on the 1st of July 1920.

Ernest then gained work as a labourer and by 1924 was back playing football for the Solomontown Football Club when they won the premiership.
Ernest and Lily were later made Life Members of this Club for their timeless work and Ernest also joined the Pt Pirie RSL.

With the outbreak of WW2 their son Walter enlisted into the 3rd Field Ambulance on the 22nd of February 1939 (S30142), but he only attended camps and was released fro duty with the South Australian Railways.

Lily died on the 22nd of October 1948 in the Pt Pirie Hospital and Ernest buried her in the Pt Pirie Cemetery; PRE, Lot 2, Grave 3.

Ernest died on the 11th of August 1957 in Northfield and was buried 2 days later in the Pt Pirie Cemetery; PRE, Lot 2, Grave 4, next to Lily.
