Son of Robert Foggo and Mary Foggo nee Clark of Hope Valley, SA. Brother of John Henry  Foggo, Jane Foggo, James Foggo who returned to Australia on 13 April 1919  having served with the 50th Battalion, Edward Foggo who returned to Australia on 1 Jult 1919 having served with the 48th Battalion, Anne Mary and Helen Mary Foggo

Robert Albert Foggo was born on March 21, 1896, in Hope Valley, South Australia. His parents were Robert and Mary Foggo, and he had six siblings: Margaret, Jane, Edward, Annie, John, and James Foggo. Before enlistment, he worked as a gardener.

Robert Albert Foggo enlisted on 24 August 1915 in the Australian Imperial Force. He was 20 years and 5 months old, standing at 5 feet 9 ½ inches. He weighed 148 lbs and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and dark brown hair; his denomination was Methodist.

Albert embarked from Melbourne on 27 October 1915 aboard the HMAT A24 Benalla. He was taken on strength with the 10th Battalion.

On 1 October 1917, Robert Albert was in Belgium. He and his battalion were in the support line, holding the line near Anzac Bridge. Early in the morning at 3, a shell fell among their men. It was reported that Robert suffered severe injuries, which ultimately led to his death ‘He had both legs blown off by a shell, near Ypres, and died almost immediately. This happened in the trenches, I saw him killed and knew him very well.’ – Dickson. “He was immediately on a stretcher bearer and was 5ft 10 inches and was fairly dark and wiry.”

After Robert passed away, his family published a heartfelt messages about him in a newspaper, expressing their pride in his sacrifice for his country, reflecting the immense loss felt by their family. Robert is remembered today through the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. His name is also located at panel 59 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, Australia.
