106 years ago today, on the 9th February 1917, Private Arthur Woodhams, 1st Battalion (Reg No-890), barber or barman from Waroonga Road, Waratah, New South Wales, was Killed in Action, age 33. Place and cause of death not stated.

Born at St Peters, New South Wales on the 8th April 1883 to William (died - 2.12.1925, age 76, of Cintra Road, Waratah, N.S.W.) and Isabella (Isobella) Woodhams nee Colyer (died 16.4.1931, age 81, of Turton Road, Waratah, N.S.W. and Christo Road, Waratah, N.S.W.), Arthur enlisted on the 18th August 1914 at Randwick, N.S.W. (as WOODHAM).

Admitted to hospital 14.9.1915 (hernia and diarrhoea), 7.2.1916 (nervous debility, stated not shell shock, pyorrhoea).

Returned to Melbourne, Australia on the 19th June 1916, invalided with a debility and pyorrhoea (loss of all teeth).

Returned to duty on the 6th September 1916 and re-embarked 7th October 1916, arriving in England on the 21st November 1916.

Arthur is resting at Warlencourt British Cemetery, France. Plot IV Row G Grave 30.

Mr. Woodhams’s name has been inscribed on the Waratah Park Memorial Gates, Waratah-St Philip's Anglican Church Roll of Honour and the Waratah & Mayfield Roll of Honour.

Place of Association – Waratah, New South Wales, Australia.

There is no memorial inscription on the gravesite plaque for the Woodhams family to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, so August 2022 I erected a Memorial cross adorned with poppies in remembrance of Arthur’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 2-116. 21.
