Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Carl Olof Beckman was born in London, England, and grew up in Port Pirie, South Australia. His exact date of birth is unclear but is most likely February of 1889. Beckman was 26 and 11 months old, 5 foot 9 inches tall and single. His chest measured 37 – 39 inches and he had grey-coloured eyes. Before enlisting in the AIF, he worked as a fireman. He was a Christian who followed the Church of England. He listed his brother, Hamil Reinhold Beckman, who lived in Surbrunnsgatan 12, Stockholm, Sweden, as his next of kin.

Beckman enlisted on 12 January 1916, in Adelaide, South Australia. He was assigned to the 10th Reinforcement of the 27th Battalion. 27-year-old Beckman embarked from Adelaide, on board RMS Mongolia on 9 March 1916.

On 2 September 1916, Beckman got haemorrhoids and received treatment in hospital until 4 October 1916 when he was discahrged to base. On 9 October, he joined the unit. On 2 March 1917, he was wounded in action. Beckman got a gunshot wound in his right buttock on 4 March 1917 and was sent to hospital in England due to this on 9 March 1917. He was admitted to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital in Darford  11 March 1917.

Beckman committed a crime in France on 3 June 1916. He was drunk and he was awarded three days of field penalty twice.

Beckman was wounded in action again on 10 June 1918 and embarked to England where he was hospitalised on 19 June 1918.

Beckman died on the 10th of March 1949 at 60. He was buried at Happy Valley Cemetery in Port Lincoln, South Australia.
