LOSS TO UNLEY PARISH
Rev. Edward Humbert Fernie, B.A. (rector of St. Augustine's Church, Unley)has been appointed rector of All Saints' Church. East St. Kilda. Melbourne. Mr. Fernie graduated in arts at Pembroke College, Cambridge, in 1904. and was also a student at Wells Theological College. He was ordained deacon in 1903 and priest in 1906. From 1905 to 1909 he was curate of Birstall in the diocese of Wakefield, and of Middlewieh, diocese of Chester. England, from 1909 to 1911. In 1911 Mr. Fernie was appointed priest in-charge of Franklin Harbor Mission where he remained until 1914. when he accepted the position of rector of Moonta with Wallaroo. From 1915 to 1918 he served abroad as chaplain with the Australian Imperial Forces. and in 1918 he was appointed chaplain of the fourth class to the Australian Military Forces. Mr. Fernie has been in charge of Unley parish since 1918. He was instrumental in having the handsome new church of St. Augustine built to meet the need for increased accommodation. His removal to Victoria will be a severe loss to Unley, as he is greatly beloved by his parishioners. HIe is an eloquent preacher, and his church is frequently crowded. St. Augustine's has an exceptionally large number of communicants. From a mere handful of boys, Mr Fernie has evolved what is perhaps the largest Bible class for lads in the diocese. He is a lover of ritual, and the services a t St. Augustine's are reverently and beautifully celebrated. Mr. Fernie is enthusiastic regarding dramatic work, and has for several years been the leading spirit in an amateur society in his parish. In the recent church pazeant written by Miss Nora Collisson. B.A., he took the role of a presbyter. Mr. Fernie is unmarried. has a fine library, and is a lover of dogs.
