James Rusher CAMPBELL was born in 1887 at Abbotsford, Victoria. He embarked as a member of B Squadron, 9th Light Horse Regiment

Farrier Sergeant James Rusher Campbell enlisted into the 9th Light Horse Regiment Australian Imperial Force on the 4th day of September 1914 at Morphettville SA after serving 12months in the 16th SA Light Horse. He embarked at Melbourne VIC “HMAT Karroo” on the 11th day of February 1915, disembarking at Egypt on the 14th day of March 1915.

On the 20th day of November 1915 he was taken on strength with the Composite Regiment of Light Horse, B Squadron at Heliopolis, Cairo, Egypt and appointed the position of Farrier Sergeant. This unit was newly raised and was attached to the Composite Yeomanry Mounted Brigade and the Composite Infantry Brigade, which comprised the 2/8th Middlesex, 2/7th Middlesex, 1/6th Royal Scots and the 15th (Ludhiana) Battalion of Sikhs. They boarded the train at Zeitoun for the British training camp, Mex Camp.

On the 8th day of December 1915 they moved to Matruh but were ordered back to Samaket el Medwa 16 Km south of Matruh and took part in the battle at Wadi el Hasheifiat and Gebel el Olamiya ridge on the on the 13 day of December. Between the 15th December 12th of January the Light Horse and Yeomanry continued there patrol work as snipers along the road to El Daaba.

On the 15th day of January they were sent to El Daaba as part of the garrison and on the 18th day of January 1916 at Alexandria they were disbanded. Farrier Sergeant James Campbell transferred to the 9th Light Horse Regiment on the 18th day of January 1916 at Heliopolis and marched out to the Serapeum, Alexandria, Egypt on the front line on the 27th day of February 1916 to join the 3rd Light Horse Brigade taking part in the defence of the Suez Canal.

From the 1st day of March 1916 through to the 27th day of October 1916 the 9th Light Horse were at Bally Bunnion, Dreidar, Nagid, Abudarem, Hasanein, Hodnabit, Mazar, Amara, Bir El Abd, Willegha and Et Maler and their objective was to advance and follow the Turk’s retreat back across the Sinai Desert.

On the 19th day of November 1916 Farrier Sergeant James Campbell was transferred to rest camp at Port Said and returned to duty on the 22nd day of November 1916. He was admitted to 3rd Light Horse Ambulance at Mahla with Piles on the 19th day of December 1916 and transferred to the Receiving Station. On the 20th day of December transferred to the N.Z Mounted Ambulance and the following day transferred to the 24th Stationary Hospital, Kantara, Tunisia, Egypt.

On the 22nd day of December 1916 he was transferred to the 31st General Hospital, Port Said, Egypt and transferred to No 14 Australian General Hospital, Cairo on the 28th day of December 1916. He embarked Suez on the 8th day of March 1917 on the “HT Wilochra” for Australia due to an Irritable Heart, Debility and Haemorrhoids. He disembarked Australia on the 26th day of April 1917.

Farrier Sergeant James Rusher Campbell was discharged from the AIF on the 1st day of June 1917 medically unfit.
