An Original Anzac who served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

83 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 12th August 1940, Private John Hamill, also spelt HAMMILL, 1st Battalion (Reg No-1125), marine fireman from 32 Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales and 34 Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., father of four (Thelma, Joe, Edna, Loris), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 65. ANGLICAN 3-155. 8.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 16th September 1874 to Daniel Alexander and Catherine Hamill; husband of Frances Amelia Hamill nee Harman (married 1902, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 29.6.1946, Newcastle Hospital, N.S.W., age 68, sleeping here) of 34 Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., John enlisted on the 2nd October 1914 at Kensington, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board Transport A19 Afric on the 18th October 1914.
Admitted to hospital 12.8.1915 (influenza), 19.9.1915 (enteritis - inflammation of your small intestine).
John returned home on the 20th November 1917, being discharged medically unfit (senility, asthma, bronchitis) on the 20th December 1917.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.

Mr. Hamill’s name has been inscribed on the Cooks Hill St. John's Anglican Church Honor Roll and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

Service record states Died after Discharge, 21/8/1940 (should be 10/8/1940).

I have placed poppies upon John’s brown granite headstone in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
