Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

William Picken Barrie was the son of Thomas and Emma Barrie from Newcastle NSW. He married Mildred Barnes during 1906 and was the father of five little girls. He worked at the Wallsend Colliery. He enlisted during September 1916 and joined the 53rd Battalion in Belgium during July 1917.

His brother 3997 Arthur Barrie, 4th Battalion AIF, died of wounds during April 1917.

William was promoted Lance Corporal, September 1917. He was killed at Peronne on 1 September 1918 when a barrage of shells struck his platoon, killing seven men. They were buried on the spot, and after the war all reinterred in the Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension.
