Son of Ernest Edward and Angelina Jane Webster of 36 Fenchurch Street, London, England.

Ernest was born in London, and joined the machine department of the Sydney Morning Herald in June 1914.

In June 1916, he enlisted in the Infantry with two other comrades from the Machine Room - the late Joseph Heady and S.C. Hayhurst - and saw considerable service in France.

He returned to Australia per 'Ypiringa' 9th January 1920.
