Samuel was born in Broadstone and enlisted for the Great War in January 1916 at Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. Before this he was a Labourer. Samuel was Killed in Action (Wounded and Missing) on  4th October 1917. He gave his father as his next of kin, James Bowman who resided at 57 Blandford Road, Hamworthy. He left all his effects to his sister Mrs Eva Mary Lush of 4 Doultons Terrace, Lake Road, Hamworthy. His effects sent to his father and sister included "Bible, razor, buttons, rubber armlets, leather purse, coins ". He is remembered on the Hamworthy War Memorial-Dorset.
