Thomas Allan Paton was born on 10th of May 1892, at Thowgla, Victoria. He was the eldest of three children to John Andrew and Fances (nee Collins) Paton. Tragically when Thomas was only 2 years old his two sisters and mother died. Thomas grew up to be a Grazier.
Thomas enlisted on the 24th of May 1915 at Broadmeadows, Melbourne, Victoria. At the time Thomas was single and 23 years old. He was allocated to Regimental Number 4877 and placed in the 8th Reinforcements, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT SS Makarini on 15th September 1915.
On the 20th of October 1915 he was taken on strength with the 27th Brigade Field Artillery attached to number 5 Battery. On the 21st of March 1916, Thomas proceeded overseas to join the BEF in France. In June 1917 Thomas was admitted to hospital with an infection. On the 17th October 1917, Thomas was discharged from hospital. In early December in 1918 he went on leave for 2 weeks in the UK. Thomas returned to Australia on the 5th of June 1919 on the transport Suffolk.
After the war ended, Thomas married Mary Jane Gillies on the 15th of April,1922. Thomas and Mary had 4 children, 3 boys and 1 girl. Thomas died on 18 December 1970 in Ballarat.
