George Ethelbert Johnson was 30 when he enlisted for the war, on the 30th of June 1915. He embarked on the 18th of Nov, 1915 on the HMAT A2 Geelong.
He was taken as a Prisoner of War at Fromelles on the 20-7-16, and he was repatriated on the 23-12-18. After being rescued, he was brought to England. Less then a year later, he took some leave and got married to a 41 year-old widow, Gabrielle.
He continued to serve in the AIF until the 27th of the 3rd, 1920, where he was medically discharged for neurasthenia. Neurasthenia is an outdated term for a mental disorder, the symptoms including headaches, fatigue and the like.
