Richard was a career soldier and he enlisted with the Jugo-Slavs Special Service Battalion on the 7th August 1917. He had 16 years 4 months with the Australian Garrison Artillery and 5 years 1 month with the Instructional Staff and he was still serving on enlisting. Lt-Colonel James Walker, DSO, VD was appointed to command the contingent and Captain William Forbes Stuart Erskin Buchan was appointed adjutant and quartermaster. Four Warrant Officer Instructors were appointed, Richard being one of these. They called for volunteers among the Jugo Slavs in Australia and 88 came forward. The contingent embarked for Salonika where they were handed over to the Serbian Army. After Richard returned to Australia he was discharged from the Australian Imperial Force and he returned to his position in the Instructional Corps. He was promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer Class One on 1st October 1927 and he received Long Service Good Conduct Medal in 1929. Just prior to his discharge from the Australian Permanent Forces on 24th April 1936 he was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal.
