Born 19 July 1888 near Kapunda, South Australia.

Father John Gurry and Mother Rose Gurry (nee Siney)
living at Kapunda, South Australia; later moving to Broken Hill, New South Wales.

After leaving school he was for some years on the staff of the "Barrier Miner."

He was also for some time on the clerical staff of Messrs. Stephens & Bartlett, sharebrokers.

He was church reporter on the Melbourne "Argus" for about two years, and was a contributor
to the "Bulletin" and the Sydney "Worker."

Prior to enlisting he lived at Petersburg (now called Peterborough) South Australia.

Described on enlisting as 26 years 5 months old; single; 5' 9 1/2" tall; 149 lbs;
reddish complexion; brown eyes; brown hair; Roman Catholic.

17/12/1914      completed medical at Oaklands Park - fit for service

1/2/1915         Commanding Officer appointed Joseph to 4th reinforcements,
                       10th Infantry Battalion, Morphettville Campus

1/4/1915         Embarked from Outer Harbour, Port Adelaide, on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln
                       as a Private with the 4th reinforcements, 10th Infantry Battalion

7/5/1915          taken on strength into the 10th Battalion (from reinforcements)

15/5/1915        His last card written to his mother (the same day he was killed).

19/5/1915        Killed in action at the Dardanelles, GALLIPOLI
