Son of Thomas Marshall of 302 Ross Street, Port Melbourne, Victoria. Foster son of E. Houston of 1 James Street, Brighton, Victoria. Next of kin given as his brother William Joseph  Marshall later identified as William Joseph Mayron

In March 1929 the acting Town clerk of the Brighton Town Hall, Victoria wrote to the Defence Department, St Kilda, Victoria stating that Victorian Branch of the R.S.S.I.LA. had enclosed a communication from a W.J. Mayron stating that James Marshall was not his correct name and that his correct name was James Mayron. Record was altered to show him as James Mayron
