William Robert Sim enlisted on the same day as his younger brother 6632 Pte. Arthur John Sim (/explore/people/347785) - They embarked together, and they fell together in Belgium on the same day.
William was buried in the Military Cemetery at Broodseinde, within a few metres of where he fell. After the war, his grave could not be located and he is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave.
"OUR HEROES. TWO BROTHERS KILLED TOGETHER.
Privates W. E. and A. J. Sim, second and third sons of Mr and Mrs Geo. Sim, of Bacon street, Hindmarsh, were killed in action on October 18 in France. Enlisting together in September, 1916, they left the Outer Harbour with the 19th reinforcements of the 27th Battalion on January 24, 1917. After finishing their training in England they left for France in July, where they were transferred to the 60th Battalion. Both boys attended the Hindinarsh Congregational Church. Will also took an interest in the West Hindmarsh Methodist Church. They took a keen interest in sport, especially cricket, and were members of the Bowden Cricket Club for several years. Prior to enlisting Will was employed on the staff of Clarkson Limited, as accountant, the younger brother (Arthur) being employed on the clerical staff of Messrs A. W. Sandford & Co. The news of their death came as a great shock to their parents, as they had just received a cable on October 17 stating that both were well." - from the Adelaide Daily Herald 12 Nov 1917 (nla.gov.au)
