Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

73 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 2nd November 1950, Private Frederick Thomson, 34th Battalion (Reg Nos- 1894 & 1894A), jockey from Nabiac, New South Wales and 32 Gow Street, Hamilton North, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 61. PRESBYTERIAN-4NE. 32.

Born at Merewether, New South Wales on the 3rd January 1889 as THOMPSON to Robert Leslie (died 3.8.1953, Merewether, New South Wales, age 95) and Rose Thomson (died 29.8.1923, Merewether, New South Wales, age 67) of 63 Railway Street, Merewether, New South Wales and 3 Macquarie Street, Merewether (Glebe), N.S.W., Fred enlisted on the 16th March 1916 at West Maitland, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A15 Port Sydney on the 4th September 1916.

Wounded in action - 8.2.1917 (GSW chest & back, mild).

Transferred to England 23.2.1917.

Embarked for Australia 23.5.1917.

Fred returned home on the 20th July 1917, being discharged medically unfit on the 4th September 1917.

Mr. Thomson’s name has been inscribed on the Nabiac War Memorial, Nabiac St Paul's Anglican Church Honour Roll and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, wounded, returning home, etc.

Service record states Died after Discharge, 31-10-1950.

Plaque in New South Wales Garden of Remembrance.
Officially commemorated 27.4.1957.

Also small Plaque on curbing.

Unfortunately, headstone has now toppled from its base.

I have placed poppies at Fred’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
