47 years ago today, on the 5th December 1977, Private Oscar William Brock, 35th Battalion (Reg No-3431), carter from 6 Wolfe Street, Newcastle, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 79. METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 22 NW. 31.
Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 30th November 1898 to Charles Edward Snr, died 26.7.1921, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 45? or 55?, buried at ANGLICAN 1-09. 56, from 6 Wolfe Street, Newcastle, New South Wales, and Louisa Brock nee May, died 20.2.1953, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 83, mother of 5 daughters & 5 sons, sleeping at ANGLICAN 1-09. 56, from 6 Wolfe Street, Newcastle, New South Wales and 159 King Street, Newcastle, N.S.W.; husband of Mary Adelaide Brock nee Cannon, married 26.1.1965, Hamilton, N.S.W., (Oscar 66 years of age), died 4.4.1977, age 80, sleeping here, Oscar enlisted on the 16th April 1917 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A28 Miltiades on the 2nd August 1917.
Admitted to hospital at sea 17.8.1917 (diarrhoea), 1.5.1918 (influenza), 10.5.1918 (appendicitis, severe), 7.9.1918 (gastroenteritis, severe).
Granted furlough from 6.6.1918 to 20.6.1918 and 11.10.1918 to 25.10.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 8.1.1919.
Oscar arrived home invalided on the 20th February 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 26th March 1919.
Mr. Brock’s name has been inscribed on the Glen Innes District First World War Roll of Honour, Glen Innes & District Soldiers Memorial and the Newcastle East Public School Roll of Honour. Nothing located as to why Oscar has been associated with Glen Innes.
I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Oscar’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Not officially commemorated.
