While serving in Egypt he was admitted to hospital at Port Said on 1 February 1918 with a fractured and lacerated left leg sustained when kicked by a horse while on remount duty. Further treatment was administered at No. 14 General Hospital from 11 March. Due to severe hemorrhaging William was returned to Australia on the Devon from Suez on 18 October and discharged as medically unfit on 9 March 1919.
