A mothers loss

Francis [Frank] Charles Ross

Was born in Maldon Victoria in 1981 to Donald Ross and Hannah Lamb
Francis enlisted on 15th Feb 1915 and embarked overseas on 22/8/1915" HMAT Anchesis" as part of 3rd Reinforcements/ 22nd infantry Battalion 1 AIF.
He saw action in Galipoli landing in 20/10/1915 but was admitted to hospital with a sprained ankle 16/12/1915 and was evacuated to Egypt 20/12/15 .
He landed in Mersailles in 26/3/1916 and entrained to northern France to join the B.E.F., he would spend time in Armentières training before moving south to join the
Somme offensive.
We understand that the 22nd battalion moved into the trenches near Pozieres on the 27th July 16.
Francis was reported "Wounded" on the 5th August between 27/7 -4/8/16, this was amended on the 14/12 to"Wounded & Missing", subsequently a court of inquiry was held on 26/12/17 where this was amended to "Killed in Action"

Francis Ross was the only child of the 2nd marriage of Hannah Lamb [nee Johns], another child from her 1st marriage Pte Thomas Cooper [1925] 7th Battalion was killed in action on the 7th Oct 1917 in an action on Westhoek ridge as part of 3rd Ypres campaign.
