"I saw him killed by the explosion of a bomb, which he struck with his pick, when
digging a sap at Pozieres on 24th July 1916. He was my own brother's son.
I saw him buried close to the parpet. I have written home to his people. The
ground was held at the time. I was an eye witness."
Witness: 2618 Private Henry Courtenay stated:
"I was in the next section of the trench, when Jimmy Hayes sang out to me that
'Goldie had got it'. He and a Pioneer were both killed at the same time, they
were digging the trench deeper, and when of the men struck a bomb with his pick.
The body was put out over the trench, and no doubt buried their by Pioneers
attached to the Battalion."
Witness: Sergeant Dave Morton stated:
"He got killed on 24.7.16 and he is not buried in a registered cemetery. But I buried
him myself in No Man's Land, this side of Pozieres, along side of a trench calld
Black Watch Avenue. I cannot give any description of him for not knowing him
personally, but I can remember him because we were under shell fire at the time.
