Edward William (Ted) Sansome was born at Gray Street, Adelaide, South Australia on 24 October 1894. [1] He was the first child of William Fletcher and Elizabeth Ann (Robertson) Sansome.
Ted attended Grange Public School, South Australia. He started work at a young age and at the time of his enlistment was working as a dairyman.
Edward enlisted in the 9th Light Horse Regiment (SN 332) on the 20 Oct 1914, a few days before his 20th birthday. He served as a Trooper at Gallipoli, Palestine and Egypt. He returned to Australia in 1919.
On the 10th April 1920 Ted married Ivy Barbara Gee. They lived at Frederick Street, Welland, South Australia where they raised their children, Reginald William (Reg) Sansome and Nancy Pauline Sansome (Ellis).
Ted was a licensed Marine Store Merchant - specifically his work involved bottle collection with a side trade in scrap metal. Perhaps indicative of his love of horses, Ted made his rounds by horse and wagon right up until his retirement in the early 1960s.
Ted was also active in the Boy Scout movement in the 1920s and 1930s. He participated in the First Australian Scout Jamboree (Frankston, Victoria, 1934) and Centenary Scout Corroboree (Belair National Park, South Australia, 1936).
Ted died on 27 July 1971. His beloved wife Ivy predeceased him, having died on 27 March 1969.

[1] Both on his enlistment papers and his marriage certificate, Ted gave his place of birth as Thebarton, South Australia. An extract from his birth registration, which he did not see until late in life, records his place of birth at Gray Street, Gawler Ward [Adelaide], South Australia, Book No. 552, Page 115. The extract cited is dated 23 Oct 1963.
