Thomas Dixon was a 36-year-old labourer from Thebarton, South Australia, originally born in Hunslet, Yorkshire, England. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 27 September 1915 at Keswick.

At enlistment, he was described as 5'3" tall, weighing 116 lbs, with a fair complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. His chest measured 33–37 inches, and he had normal vision in both eyes. He was Methodist and unmarried.

Dixon had no prior military service and was willing to serve overseas. He signed up as part of Australia’s contribution to the First World War effort.
