Son of William Oates and Elizabeth Jane Oates nee Beard of 'Arthur Leigh', Moore Street, Sandringham, Victoria.
Step brother of Charles Oates who returned to Australia on 22 April 1919 having served with the 6th Field Artillery Brigade
At the time of enlistment he was employed by Gordon Lyons of Brunswick, Victoria but had served his four year apprenticeship with C.J. Powell of Elstenwick, Victoria.
Commenced return to Australia on 28 March 1919 aboard HT Port Macquarie disembarking on 26 May 1919
