Andrew Rankine was born in the year 1879 in Falkirk, Scotland. He was raised by his mother, Christina Rankine who was his only next of kin and he was brought up as a Presbyterian. Andrew had dark brown hair with bright blue eyes and as an adult he was a farmer. He was 5 feet 6 inches tall and was 63 kg in weight at the time. His regimental number was 6379 and was ranked private.
Andrew enlisted at the age of 37. On the 23rd October 1916 Andrew was enlisted to the 11th battalion in the Australia Imperial Force, in Toowoomba, Queensland. Upon the enlistment Private Rankine stated that he owned basic clothing, shirts, jacket, badges, boots, braces and toiletries. Private Rankine and Christina eventually lived in Moola via Dalby, Brisbane, Queensland after migrating from Scotland.
On the 23rd December 1916, Private Rankine and the troops travelled to Plymouth, Sydney and marched down to the docks to depart from the harbour. They travelled by a ship to England and settled into Britain to take part in WW1.
During Private Rankine’s service, he was relocated to different areas, with a range of battalions. He was part of the 25th battalion before WW1 started, the 47th battalion in 1918 and he was also involved in the 15th battalion in early 1919.
Throughout the time spent in Britain, Private Rankine suffered pneumonia. He spent a lot of time at the Bath War Hospital to recover at different times of the year. From 1917 to 1918 and also visited a dental clinic to examine his teeth in 1919. Although Private Andrew was assisted with medical problems, he was discharged from WW1 due to dental condition and returned to Australia on the 21st March 1919.
