Pte 849 Robert Hamilton Coutts joined the 39th Battalion in France on 28 January 1917. He was hospitalised on 21 April 1917 with defective vision, then pleurisy.

He was evacuated to UK on 10 May 1917 and admitted to the Grove Military Hospital, Tooting Grove, London, where he later died of pneumonia on 18 October 1917.
