Letter from Private Denis C. Jacob.
I am going to start very abruptly, and give you my latest news. Just as I began this
note one of our officers came in and gave us notice to prepare to join the Mediterranean
Expeditionary Forces in a few days.
"It was by no means the best of trips that we had to make the best of and endure with
a smile. Still it is up to us to do it in the face of all trouble and danger, and I think that all my
comrades, at least, will stand as long as any. When we arrived here in Egypt we were put on
to much harder work and longer hours; nevertheless, this change has come and gone in its
turn, and we are quite used to it now.
"I have been on several trips around Cairo so far, and have seen and enjoyed many
sights of both historical and biblical interest.
'Randall Virgoe and I had one very enjoyable excursion when we went over the house
and garden of Pharaoh, and looked well over them, seeing at the time the place where Moses
was found by Pharaoh's daughter. We were rather honoured on the same day by being able to
enter the old Jewish synagogue where are kept the five books of the Old Testament, the
"Lora," that is - of course , I mean the old original.
"I was extremely interested to find out from the Egyptians, who seemed very well
educated, that there are a number of high schools in Cairo. I have not been able to find out
much about them, but believe they are run on something similar lines to ours, with the exception that the students attend seven days a week instead of five; they have no Saturday or
Sunday holidays.
"On board the s.s. 'Ballarat' there were six of us from the old A.H.S., and since I have
been here I have met many more. We have all enjoyed frequent talks of the joys and woes we
experienced there, and also since we left.
"Please remember me to my old teachers, and give my best wishes to the boys and
girls. I will always look back with fond remembrance to my old school, where I spent so
many happy and profitable days.
