Son of William Oates and Alice Oates of Ballengarra, Wilson River, NSW.

Brother of Reginald Oates who returned to Australia on 28 June 1919 having served with the Australian Army Medical Corps Details; Clifford William Oates who was killed in action on 21 July 1917 while serving with the 35th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on Menin Gate, Ypres, Panel 25.
