Son of George Hose and Janet Hose nee Murfitt of Foster Street, Warrnambool, Victoria. Brother of Robert Andrew Hose MM who died of wounds on 18 May 1917 while serving with the 1st Field Artillery Brigade and is buried in the Grevillers British Cemetery, Plot 111, Row A, Grave 17

Served his mechanics apprenticeship with C.J. Clothier of Warrnambool, Victoria

Commenced return to Australia on 3 March 1919 aboard HT Euripides disembarking on 25 April 1919
