Died on this date – 22nd October…… William Charles Coultis was born at Rockhampton, Queensland in 1871 to parents John & Eliza/ Ellen Coultis (nee Glenny).

He married Sarah Jane William in Queensland on 1st February, 1893. They had the following children Ethel Maude Coultis (born 3 July, 1893; died 18 November,1893); Winifred Maud & Eliza May Coultis (born 17 August, 1894; died 5 November, 1894); William Charles Edward Coultis (born 13 January, 1896; died 1964) & John Alan Coultis (born 3 March, 1908; died 1986).

On 19th February, 1916 William Charles Coultis enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) as a 44 year old, married, Bootmaker from Brisbane, Queensland.

Private William Charles Coultis, Service number 5314, embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on HMAT Itonus (A50) on 8th August, 1916 with the 7th Infantry Brigade, 25th Infantry Battalion, 14th Reinforcements & disembarked at Plymouth, England on 18th October, 1916.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

He proceeded overseas to France on 13th December, 1916 from 7th Training Battalion & was posted to 2nd A.D.B.D. (Australian Divisional Base Depot) at Etaples, France on 14th December, 1916. Private Coultis proceeded from 2nd A.D.B.D. on 16th December, 1916 to join his Unit & was taken on strength of 25th Battalion in France on 18th December, 1916 from 14th Reinforcements.

On 27th May, 1917 Private Coultis reported sick. He was admitted to 5th Field Ambulance on 27th May, 1917 then transferred & admitted to 56th Casualty Clearing Station with Appendicitis. Private Coultis was transferred to Ambulance Train on 8th June, 1917 & admitted to No. 6 General Hospital on 9th June, 1917. He embarked from Rouen on 16th June, 1917 for England on Hospital Ship Aberdonian.

Private Coultis was admitted to 1st London General Hospital, England on 17th June, 1917 with Appendicitis.

On 20th July, 1917 he was transferred to Holborn Military Hospital, Mitcham. Private Coultis was transferred on 26th July, 1917 to St. James Infirmary, Wandsworth, London, England.

Private William Charles Coultis died at 3 pm on 22nd October, 1917 at St. James Infirmary, Balham, London, England from Carcinoma of Caecum.

He was buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey, England where around 360 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
