Wilfred was one of the nine children of Francis and Susan Dunhill. He did basic training at Mitcham with G Coy Infantry Base Depot from 25 January to 16 March 1915, when he was attached to the 7th Battalion. He embarked from Adelaide on HMAT A2 Geelong on 31 May 1915. At Gallipoli, Wilfred was with the Field Ambulance from 25 October to 2 November, being treated for enteritis. At Malta, he was treated for dysentery from 8 December to 22 February 1916, prior to being sent to the All Saints Convalescent Camp at Malta. In March, Wilfred was stationed at Alexandria, Egypt.
He was sent to the 3rd General Hospital at Wandsworth, England on 24 August suffering inflammation of the stomach. Wilfred served at Weymouth Depot in February 1917, and Parkhouse Camp with the 50th Battalion on 9 May. He was attached for duty with Anzac Provost Corps, London, before being stationed at Weymouth again on 24 August1918.
Ill health continued to plague Wilfred to the extent of being diagnosed as suffering from gastritis and senility, on 19 October he embarked the Sardinia for Australia on 19 October, disembarking on 27 December. He was discharged as medically unfit on 17 February 1919.
Wilfred was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
Wilfred Dunhill died at Fullarton, Adelaide, on 2 October 1941. The Advertiser of 3 October stated, “Death notice: Dunhill- On October 2 at Adelaide, Wilfred Robert (late of 50th Battalion) loved son of Susan and the late Francis Dunhill (late of Orroroo ) and loving brother of Albert, Will, Walter, Edgar, Clarry, Mabel, Hilda and Hazel; aged 65 years.”
