76 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 6th July 1945, Lance Corporal William (Billy) Hawley, 34th Battalion (Reg No-783), miner from Maitland Street, Kurri Kurri, New South Wales and 37 Young Street, Carrington, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 61. ANGLICAN 3-170. 22.

Born at North Staffordshire, United Kingdom about 1884 to William and Eliza Hawley; husband of Louisa Hawley nee? (married? died 1961) of 31 Robertson Street, Carrington, New South Wales, Billy enlisted February 1916 at West Maitland, N.S.W.

Billy returned home September 1918, being discharged medically unfit (inguinal hernia) on the 29th November 1918.

Mr. Hawley’s name has been inscribed on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates, Carrington Municipal District Roll of Honor and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Billy’s gravesite to honour his service and sacrifice for God, King and Country.

Younger brother John Coleman (1st Australian Tunnelling Company, Reg No-3309, born 1887?, died 13.2.1946, Islington, N.S.W.), from Maitland Street, Kurri Kurri, N.S.W., and 31 Robertson Street, Carrington, N.S.W., also served 1st A.I.F.
