Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

“I Once was Lost, but Now am Found”.

95 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 5th December 1925 (3 funerals on this day), Private William Edward Revatto, 53rd Battalion (Reg No-2655), horse driver from 5 Rae Street, Randwick, New South Wales and 6 Queen Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 28. CATHOLIC 1-20. 65.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 14th March 1897 to Edward and Eleanor Revatto; husband of Elizabeth Revatto nee Wills (married ?, died ?), William enlisted June 1915 with the 1st Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 7.11.1915 (pyrexia).
Wounded in action - 19.7.1916 (GSW buttock and loin, mild, Battle of Fromelles), 24.4.1918 (gassed, GSW right arm, elbow, severe).

Disembarked Capetown, South Africa, 10.3.1919 suffering from pyonephrosis, reported wounded 2nd occasion. William returned home June 1919, being discharged on the 23rd December 1919.

I have not located Mr Revatto’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I located William resting in an unmarked grave, another Forgotten Digger of The Great War, so December 2017 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite to honour his service for God, King and Country.

An application for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip submitted January 2019, and was accepted February 2019.
Completed July 2019.

Honour and dignity restored.

The dead are only ever truly forgotten when they are spoken of no more.

Lest We Forget.
