Son of Edward Thomas Annells and Mary Crossman (nee Brown) Annells of Woodville Road, Woodville, SA; brother of Herbert Edward Annells, Frank Harrold Annells who returned to Australia on 15 May 1919 having served with the 5th Field Artillery Briigade, Sydney Custon Annells, Ida Florence Kingston Annells, Ruby Olive Annells, Edith Marion Annells, Albert Henry Annells who was killed in action on 5 November 1916 while serving with the 27th Battlion and Mary Eliza Annells.
10 April 1919 - commenced return to Australia on board HT Medic disembarking on 26 May 1919 for medical discharge due to Pleurisy

On 31 March 1923 Eric married Lily Vera Ralph in St Augustine Church, Unley, SA
