Sydney was the youngest of eight children of James Charles Cockburn (born 1850 in Ayrshire, Scotland) and Ann Charlotte Francis (born 1953 in Woolongong, NSW). James arrived in Brisbane QLD in 1862 and worked as a Blacksmith. He and Ann married in 1877.

Sydney - who had seved for 5 years with the Cadets (1st Field Coy (AE) in Maryborough, was an Electrician when he enlisted in 1915 in the AIF. He served as a Private (Service no: 1845) with 4th Pioneer Battalion and was WIA in 1917. Sydney was Discharged in 1920. Older bother Ernest also served in the AIF as a Private (Service No: 366).

Sydney married Iris Mary Harrison (born 1907 in Liverpool, NSW) in 1926 in Newtown, NSW. He and Iris settled in Annandale where Sydney worked as a Labourer. In 1942 he served with the ACMF as a Private (Service No: N242350), and in 1943 the family moved to Gymea Bay in Werriwa, NSW. Sydney worked as a Powder Monkey and a PMG Linesman until his death in Gymea Bay in 1951. Iris died in 1974
