Melville John Pilgrim was born in 1892 in Laura South Australia and lived in Solomon Town, Port Pirie with his mother Clara Eliza Pilgrim. He went to Stone Hut Public School and grew up to be a salesman but left for the Great War on the 6th of september 1915 at age 22 and 11 months.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force as a Sergeant in the 27th infantry battalion. He then departed from Aeneas Adelaide on the 11th of April 1916 with the 12th reinforcements to fight in the third battle of Ypres in Belgium with the service number 4654.

While in Belgium he was promoted to Lance Sergeant on the 29th of September 1917 during the Third battle of Ypres. Melville Pilgrim was killed in action in Belgium on the 9th of October at 25 years old. His will was read and checked on the 12th of December 1917 with his mother and witness A.T. Malley 2nd lieutenantz, who was also in the 27th Battilion.
