William was wounded, reported as GSW (which could be variously 'Gunshot Wound' or 'General Shrapnel Wound' ) on 27 February. He is recorded as having been evacuated through the 9th Field Ambulance. He died of wounds on 4 March and was buried in Trois Arbres Cemetery. There are a number of other cemeteries in the vicinity of Trois Arbres and most of the burials in these died of their wounds along the medical evacuation chain. There was a major complex of Casualty Clearing Stations nearby at Pont d'Achelles. William's report of death was signed by OC 2 CCS.
