During his service abroad he held the ranks of Temporary Corporal and Temporary Sergeant on several occasions

Commenced return to Australia on 9 March 1919 aboard HT Kashmir disembarking on the 2 May 1919

During 1922 Alan married Winifred D.T. Welch in Sydney, NSW
