Frederick's parents were Henry Harrington Clay and Emilie Wilhelmina Fredericka Korn, who lived at North Pine. He enlisted 15 November 1917 at Brisbane. Frederick was a motor mechanic by trade, he joined the newly formed Australian Flying Corps. After the war Frederick initially settled at Petrie and was working as a mechanic. He then moved to New South Wales where he married Margaret Grace Clay (maiden name) in 1929 and was a draughtsman at Granville, New South Wales.
