Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, not forgotten.

74 years ago today, on the 28th April 1948, Private Wallace Duffield, Australian Army Medical Corps (Reg No-17282), grocer from 155 Queen Street, Ashfield, New South Wales and 2 Clifford Street, Coogee, N.S.W. (1937) 25 Vicar Street, Coogee, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 68. BAPTIST-G SE. 14.

Born at Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom on the 7th April 1880 to Samuel (died 1919) and Harriet (died 1940) Duffield; husband of Isobel (Isabella) Duffield nee Markham (married 17.11.1909, Annandale, N.S.W., died 1960?) of 79 The Boulevarde, Dulwich Hill, New South Wales, Wallace enlisted March 1916 at Sydney, N.S.W.

Wallace returned home November 1917, being discharged medically unfit (old fracture of skull) on the 22nd December 1917.

Service record gives no indication of receiving any War Medals.

I have not located Mr. Duffield’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

Wallace’s name has not been inscribed on the family headstone, so April 2015 I placed a cross in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

A Plaque shall be placed at the gravesite courtesy of the Forgotten Diggers Headstone Project.

Many thanks to Karen Eldridge for the family history.

Lest We Forget.
