Son of Susan PASCALL (formerly MARSHALL), 126 Melbourne Street, North Adelaide, and the late Hugh MARSHALL

Prior to enlistment Hugh was a ledger-keeper at the Claremont Branch of the National Bank.

Mrs. B. Pascall, of 39 Cantonment-street, Fremantle, has received a cable message announcing that her son, Hugh Marshall, of the 44th Battalion, is dangerously ill in hospital with pneumonia. Before his enlistment he was on the staff of the National Bank at Fremantle and Claremont.

Died on this date – 2nd April…… Hugh Keith Marshall was born at Fremantle, Western Australia in 1898.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 15th February, 1916 stating he was a 21 year old, single, Clerk from 39 Cantonment Street, Fremantle, West Australia.

According to information provided by his mother for the Roll of Honour –  Hugh Keith Marshall had served in the Naval Forces.

Private Hugh Keith Marshall, Service number 594, embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia on HMAT Suevic  (A29) on 6th June, 1916 with the 44th Infantry Battalion “C” Company & disembarked at Plymouth, England on 21st July, 1916.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

On 9th August, 1916 Private Marshall was admitted to 11th Brigade Field Hospital with Gonorrhoea then transferred to Military Hospital at Bulford Camp, Wiltshire on 11th August, 1916 with V.D. He was struck off strength from Larkhill, Wiltshire in 11th October, 1916 having been absent in Hospital for over 30 days. Private Marshall was discharged from hospital on 21st December, 1916 – Total V.D. days – 133.

He proceeded overseas to France on 24th January, 1917 per Princess Clementine. He was marched in to 3rd A.D.B.D. (Australian Divisional Base Depot) at Etaples, France on 25th January, 1917. Private Marshall was marched out from 3rd A.D.B.D. on 27th January, 1917 & joined 44th Battalion in the Field on 29th January, 1917.

Private Marshall reported sick on 20th March, 1917. He was admitted to 9th Australian Field Ambulance on 20th March, 1917 with Lobar Pneumonia. Private Marshall was transferred to 2nd Casualty Clearing Station on 21st March, 1917 then transferred & admitted to 32nd Stationary Hospital at Wimereux on 31st March, 1917. He embarked for England from Boulogne, France on 31st March, 1917 on Hospital Ship Cambria.

On 1st April, 1917 Private Marshall was admitted to County of Middlesex War Hospital, Napsbury, St. Albans, England  with Pneumonia.

Private Hugh Keith Marshall died at 10.55 am on 2nd April, 1917 at County of Middlesex War Hospital, Napsbury, St. Albans, England from Pneumonia. (as per Hospital Admissions form, however the Morning State of Sick (Army form A. 27) recorded the cause of death as Syncope.)

He was buried in Hatfield Road Cemetery, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England where 16 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
