Elder of two brothers (Leslie and Norman) who served in WWI, Private Leslie Hall (Service No:2039) enlisted in the AIF on 14 October 1915, and was attached to 32nd Infantry Battalion on 7 February 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Adelaide for Suez on board HMAT A28 Militiades. Private Hall served at Zaitoum and Duntroon Plateua before embarking from Alexandria for Marseilles on 17 June 1916 on board the Transylvania. Private Hall served on the Western Front - where he was WiA on two occasions (1916 and 1917). Embarking from England for Port Adelaide on 15 May 1919 on board HT Orontes, Private Hall was attached to 5th Machine Gun Battalion at Discharge on 18 August 1919.
Les was born in Magill, South Australia in 1895, fifth of eight children of Thomas (Tom) Hall (b1862 in Walkerville, Adelaide, South Australia) and Martha Moseley (1862 in Mitcham, South Australia). Tom and Martha married in 1883 in Magill, where they settled and raised their family.
Les worked as a Labourer and Gardener in Magill before enlisting in the Army in 1915. Following his Discharge in 1919, Les returned to Adelaide, and in 1921 in Payneham married Florence Mary Leverington (b1894 in Norwood, Adelaide, South Australia). Les and Florence lived in Adelaide and then Kadina on the Yorke Peninsula, where they raised their family and Les worked as a Labourer before retiring to Largs Bay. Les died in 1963 and Florence died in 1979.
