Raid on Celtic Wood
493 Private Leslie Alfred Green a miner from Broken Hill, New South Wales, was an original member of the battalion. He was wounded at Gallipoli in 1915, then at Pozières in 1916, was awarded an MM for his bravery during the raid on Celtic Wood on 9 October 1917. Of the 88 Men who took part in the raid he was one of the 19 unwounded , however he was wounded at Jeancourt in 1918.
In October, he was serving in Lieutenant Wilsdon’s platoon (9 Platoon) in C Company and as can be seen by the recommendation for his MM below he was definitely on the raid.
Recommendation for Military Medal.
‘During a raid on the enemy position in CELTIC WOOD, east of YPRES on the morning of 9/10/17, Pte. Green displayed great gallantry and courage and during the hand-to-hand fighting his courage and determination were especially noticeable. After the signal to retire had been given Pte. GREEN remained behind and carried his platoon Sgt who had been wounded to safety, under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire.’[i]
Returned to Australia in September 1918.
