94 years ago today, on the 28th May 1929, Private George Robert Bates, 5th Australian Light Horse Regiment (Reg No-1390), boilermaker or labourer from Hamilton, New South Wales and 2 Omara Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 51. ANGLICAN 2-140. 60. Not married.

Born at Blacktown, New South Wales on the 21st November 1877 to William and Selina Bates, George enlisted on the 15th January 1915 at Brisbane, Queensland.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A47 Mashrobra on the 4th October 1915.
Admitted to hospital 26.6.1917 (not stated), 13.10.1917 (furunculosis, back), 16.12.1917 (furunculosis, back), 7.5.1918 (furunculosis, back).
George was invalided home on the 8th February 1919, being discharged medically unfit (furunculosis, chronic) on the 23rd April 1919.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, sickness, returning home, etc.

Mr. Bates’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name possibly inscribed on a Queensland War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at George’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
