William went missing at Fromelles and no trace of him was found. He was declared killed in action by a court of enquiry held on 4 September 1917. William Watterson was 45 years of age when he died and he had been married to Isabelle Winifred for 10 years. He was born in Victoria but had been living in Western Australia for many years.
His younger brother, 3508 Pte. Stanley Watterson 6th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at the Battle of Broodseinde near Ypres, Belgium 4 October 1917, aged 36.
