Gould was born in 1893 in Willington, England. On the 10th of April 1914, he moved to Melbourne, Australia, hoping to start a new life. He later became a farmer in Naracoorte, South Australia, where he worked the land
On the 10th of February 1916, at the age of 22, Gould enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). On the 8th of May 1916, he left Melbourne on the troopship HMAT Kabinga A58.
After travelling overseas, Gould trained at an AIF camp in Egypt, one of the main bases for Australian soldiers in the Middle East. During his service, he moved between regiments. He first served with the 2nd Light Horse Regiment, then the 3rd Reserve Light Horse Regiment, and later transferred to the 9th Light Horse Regiment.
During his time in service, Gould was briefly hospitalised a few times with illness. During 1917 he was hospitalised with diarrhoea in August. In May 1918 he spent time in hospital due to an infection. He returned to his unit and was again sent to hospital in early August with a fever and was diagnosed with jaundice.
Gould safely returned to Port Adelaide disembarking 29 September 1919 and he was discharged 21st November 1919
Many years later, on the 20th of February 1977, Gilbert Nathaniel Gould passed away at the age of 81. He was laid to rest in the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park in Matraville, City of Randwick, New South Wales.
