Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Thomas Johns enlisted at only 17 years of age at enlistment. His father Charles Johns enlisted at over 50 years of age with the Remount Unit and served in Egypt for over six months. A brother, 2037 Private Charles Henry Johns, 12th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Pozieres during August 1916.

Thomas was recommended for a mention in despatches during April 1918, for courage under heavy fire when trying to relocate the artillery guns of his unit. He returned to Australia during late 1919.
